Dr. Francisco J. Lozano García is Chemical Engineer graduated by the Autonomous National University of Mexico. He has master degree in Chemical Engineering by the Imperial College of Science and Technology of London, England, and a Doctorate in Philosophy with specialty in Chemical Engineering by the University of Birmingham, England. At the moment he is the Director of the Environmental Quality Center at the Monterrey Institute of Technology, Campus Monterrey. He has taught in both undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Lozano also took part in consultancy and technologies development projects, produced impact and environmental risk studies, energy and residues audits, as well as environmental analysis.

This article examines the use of materials in the productive, services, and transport sectors in the world and the consequent generation of waste. In a special way it analyzes the use of the energy in such sectors, the energy efficiency and the carbon dioxide emissions.
