On November 10th, the book "Techint and Climate Change" was introduced in the city of Buenos Aires. The ceremony was celebrated within the Techint Group Environmental and Security Annual meeting that took place in the facilities of the "Italian Circle" of Buenos Aires. Agostino Rocca, CEO and President of the Group made the formal presentation of the book. To the event attended Oscar Massei, Sustainable Development and Environmental Policies Secretary of the Argentinean Republic; Osvaldo Cantizani, Member of the Climate Change Intergovernmental Panel; Julio Garcia Velasco, Techint's Director of Environment and Technology, and current President of INTI (National Institute of Industrial Technology); as well as Sylvia Adriana Pinal, Executive Director of the BCSD-LA, among others. This publication, of unbeatable quality, is written evidence of the seriousness with which the Techint Group assumes the challenge of participating pro-actively in the solution of the climate change problem.

Carris Company Proves Electric Bus (04-Dic-2000)
Last September, the Carris Porto-Alegre Company finished the tests of an electric bus motor engine. The bus possesses a hybrid characteristic, developed in Brazil, that allows the transformation of any fuel (diesel, alcohol, and natural gas) to electric power. The company will opt for the use of natural gas. With innovative technology, this motor has a contamination index below the one allowed by Brazilian norms, and almost 60 percent lower than buses with conventional engines. The electric motor has a saving fuel capacity of 40 percent, a smaller noise level, bigger half speed, and lower installation cost. The motor has been proven several times. Therefore, Carris decided to use this electric bus in the city of Porto Alegre, state capital of Rio Grande do Sul. As a company that aims to reduce to the minimum its polluting gas emissions, Carris plans to substitute, in seven or eight years, all its vehicle fleet that currently functions with natural gas.

BCSDLA’S CLIMATE GATEWAY:

LATINAMERICA´S DOORWAY FOR GLOBAL CHANGE

Den Haag (The Hague), The Netherlands – November 08, 2000

With the support that  Latin America’s private initiative has to collaborate as part of the solution of climate change; BCSD-LA (The Business Council for Sustainable Development in Latin America), as the  sister organization of the entrepreneurial efforts for Sustainable Development,  releases in the COP6 its most innovating project: the new website: www.Climategateway.com

This is the first Spanish - English website in Latin America to provide a selective and exhaustive range of information related to the climate change problem, and its possible solutions. It is designed as a pedagogic vehicle for all kinds of audience. It will be available at cost free and will soon be launched in Portuguese as well.

The dynamism and quality of this website relies on the fact that it links and interrelates points of view, and work style from diverse society sectors from Latin-American countries and the rest of the world; such as Governments, NGO’s, IGO’s, private institutions and Universities.

A great advantage of Climategateway.com, is that it will allow users to learn, experience, and interact with each other through an open forum. They will be able to have access to the latest information, obtain specific data from qualified experts; and acquire knowledge on the subject through an online course on climate change.

The launching of this site will be held at the Netherlands Congress Center, on November 17th, 2000 at 11:30hrs.  During the ceremony, Sylvia A. Pinal,- BCSD-LA’s Executive Director will explain the features of the site, specify the project’s objectives, and demonstrate how  the BCSD-LA and Latin America’s private initiative corroborate with actions, its capabilities to lead, mobilize and respond to the problems that are affecting the world. BCSD-LA will also have a workshop on November 18th, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
